Comparison of the Speech of Brutus and Antony in Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar”
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 5 page paper comparing the speech styles used by Brutus and Antony and the purpose of those styles in Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar”. Brutus and Antony present quite different speech styles which reveal a great deal about their characters in the William Shakespeare’s tragedy “Julius Caesar”. Brutus is an honest man who is loyal to the government of Rome. He truly believes that by killing Caesar and his ambitions that it will lead to the betterment of Rome. His speeches reflect this honesty but also in many ways his naivety as he believes those around him are also sincere in their dedication to Rome for their purpose for killing Caesar. Brutus does not take bribes and throughout believes in the sincerity of those around him which eventually causes him and the conspirators to become accused by Antony at the funeral of Caesar. Brutus’ speech is direct, more formal and honest which reflects the man himself. Antony on the other hand, is loyal to Caesar, but is much more skillful in his speech which allows him to “trap” those around him to say what he wants them to say. This in turn reflects his personality as Antony, although loyal to Caesar, has ambitions of his own and his speech and his actions take upon a leadership role after Caesar’s death. Antony manipulates his speech to accommodate those around him allowing others to come to the conclusion he is trying to make without being as direct as the honest and naïve Brutus. Antony is much more cunning in his speech which reflects his nature as a cunning, ambitious and intelligent character in the play.
Bibliography lists 4 sources.
